Shawn Knol is a California-based visual artist specializing in macro abstract photography.

Using techniques normally reserved for materials science, Shawn creates explosively colorful scenes, that give way to familiar textures from everyday life.

His clients include: Adult Swim, Pivot Network (Emmy Award-winning episode), ABC’s World News with Diane Sawyer, Samsung, Audi, Subaru, New Scientist, Bath and Body Works, BASF, SLO Film Fest 2023, and Discovery Place Science Museum of Charlotte, NC.

For inspiration, Shawn uses his knowledge gained from working in Aerospace/Prototype Circuit Board Manufacturing, where he worked as Lead Front-End Inspection (Last person to modify and approve the digital design before moving into production), for projects such as: NASA's Perseverance Mars Rover, Tinkerbell’s Light-Up Wings (Disney Imagineering), Google's Quantum Computing Research Lab (Santa Barbara), and META’s Oculus Rift and Quest 2 VR Headsets.

“I like to find subjects that are simple on the surface, but transform themselves when discovered in a new light. A piece of plastic wrap, some ice from the freezer, an open can of paint. People can interact with these things their whole lives and never see what hides just a bit deeper beneath the surface.”

All effects were created using practical in-camera methods.
